The ambassador’s residential area in the embassy was developed in 1993-1998. The complex, designed by architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, is a mix of Japanese formality and local planning style around a central courtyard. The landscape created by SKA follows the same principle of using Japanese style with local plant material. The gardens are designed with free flowing forms and varying textures, to make a canvas that recreates nature. The minimalist use of natural stones and boulders reinforces this impact. A traditional dry stream runs through the garden as a lifeline, complemented by splashes of water. The tea courtyard was planted with white hibiscus set amongst large boulders to create a sense of tranquility. The central court continues the Japanese theme with a strong boulder balancing a lone China orange tree.
